William H Empson

Life in a Confederate Prison

Readers of Empsonian Logic* may have read in issue number 3 an article about William Empson, "A True Hero of the American Civil War". He served in the Union Army during the war and, after being captured at the battle of Chickamuga, was eventually imprisioned in the notorious Andersonville Prison.

I had begun to search William's story after discovering a copy of the book he wrote about his harrowing experiences with the help of Cliff Hall a descendant of the Coggins family and therefore an honourary Empson.

Development of the website now enables the full text of William's book to be displayed.

To the right is the original cover of William's book. I intend to add materials about his life and events after the war was over.
