About the census

The 1881 census was taken on the night of Sunday 3rd April and was intended to include everybody in the residence in which they were staying that night (in other words not their home if they were away from it).

The information used for this listing was originally transcribed from a set of fiche held at Birmingham Central Library. The census was initially indexed by a host of volunteers under the aegis of the Church of Latter Day Saints to whom all Genealogists ought to be eternally grateful. Since that time the census information has been issued by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. My original transcription has therefore been checked against these CDs. Anybody seriously interested in researching their family tree ought to attempt to purchase these discs which have become the cornerstone of any study.

Entries for Empson have been grouped together in Counties as they were on the original microfiche. In most cases all the information about the household in which a person named Empson has been recorded is given.

Information is as follows:

Surname.

Given Name. Second or subsequent given names are not often recorded on the census discs.

Status. i.e. Head (of household), wife, Son, Dau(ghter), etc.

Marital Status.

Age.

Sex.

Occupation. Note the spouse's occupation is rarely recorded although it seems unlikely that women did not work in addition to looking after the household. It is suggested that terms such as 'Agricultural Labourer' (Ag Lab) are as much a statement of social status as anything else.

Birth County. I have used conventional Chapman codes here where I am confident about the place. (See below).

Birth Place.

Additional notes. I have avoided making comments on the entries, but where this has been done I have used italics. Similarly I have avoided correcting the text except where I am completely sure that an error has been made. I have not transcribed entries for variant spellings i.e. Emson.
